Cheap travel tip number 4

Take a reusable water bottle with you wherever you go.

There are usually water fountains around to top it up (not necessarily in developing countries, but sometimes you can boil water or get access to purified water). This will save a lot of money spent on bottled water and also reduce environmental impact of plastic bottles from bottled water.

If you like your purified water, there is a product called Bobble which has a filter at the neck of the bottle. A friend of mine loves her Bobble!

If you want something that is travel light (rolls up uninflated), then there are many new products like Vapur which are an inflatable reusable water bottle. Another friend of mine loves his Vapur type bottle.

My favourite are the Nalgene water bottles, sturdy, BPA free, can handle both hot and cold liquids. Most are all about AUD/USD $10 or less (depends on size).

If you're an american resident, Nalgene are often on sale for $5 at Target

Cheap travel tip number 3

Print off the coupon on the bottom of the AnaheimOC website for $5 off Disneyland Express.

If you're planning to take the Disneyland Resort Express bus to/from Los Angeles Airport (LAX), use the coupon to save $5USD per person.

Regular fare is USD$32 return or USD$22. You must print of the coupon. For the coupon, click here

I tried to use a photo from my phone of the coupon, but they require the coupon printed to apply the discount. Worthwhile printing, in my honest opinion.

The Disneyland Resort Express runs hourly with the last bus departing Disneyland about 8:30pm - they leave from 3 of the Disneyland resorts. The closest departure point from the Disneyland Park is from Grand California Hotel. Worth checking out this hotel on the way too, very grand and impressive.

If you don't catch the Disneyland Resort Express (coach/bus) and you pick up the Disneyland express (shared van/shuttle), you can barter the driver down for the same price of the $5 discount, just say you have a coupon, they don't need to see it. But you do need to arrange a pick up time (or at least that's what my pushy driver said, so I took the resort express back for convenience and less hassle).

Both were fine, the Disneyland Resort Express was more comfortable being a coach and felt a little more above board. My hotel was near the airport and I just got a free shuttle to/from LAX to catch the shuttle. Gave me total flexibility and didn't have to take one of the tour buses (most advertise and promote VIP tours, of which your hotel get's a nice $25 fee per booking). Worth doing and easy as pie!

Cheap travel tip number 2

Leave about 3-4 hours between domestic and international flights in the USA, if you book the flights separately.

It'll save you $$$ in flight change fees, additional accommodation & travelling costs.

Fortunately Air Pacific's flight change fees are a minimal $100 (compared to other airlines, apparently Qantas charge you $450 to change your flight due to a death in the family + you must show the death certificate!).

My little mistake of booking cheap flights separately and only leaving 2 hours between flights cost me an additional $370 in accommodation and change fees alone. Add in activities/entertainment and food for 2 days of a further $260.

P.S. The special circumstances supporting this tip were that my domestic flight ended up being 30 minutes officially delayed + 30 minutes sitting on the runway both due to unfavourable weather (thunderstorms) + 30 minutes for luggage to come out at LAX - Los Angeles airport = 1.5 hours late).

Cheap travel in and to/from Canada

I've recently been travelling on the eastern side of Canada, namely Ontario and Quebec.

Along my travels I've chatted to other travellers, which confirms I found the cheapest deals to travel to/from and around Canada at the time (last month - May 2011).

In Canada

When time isn't of the essence, it's a good idea to sign up for promotions as you can get cheap fares through Megabus. I got a CAD $10 fare from Toronto - Montreal, normally about $26+. Usually newer buses and decent wi-fi when it works (off/on)

In Quebec

To get from Montreal - Quebec City, go with Orleans Express. You can buy tickets on the fly (no fare difference) - departures every hour.

If you want to fly in Canada, WestJet seem to consistently have the best deals - however sometimes Air Canada might have a promotion to rival the prices. Be aware that fare prices do not include taxes etc, so they look cheap but roll over the price to get the total price.

To/From Canada

To/from New York - Megabus or greyhound have competitive fares across the border.

To/from mid-west USA I have found Delta to consistently have fares around USD$200 one way to/from Canada (obviously depends on where you're flying to/from).

From/to London, UK Air Transat have budget one way fares. It's Canadian Affair/Thomas Cook if you fly from London (online booking available). Flying to London if you're not a Canadian or US resident you have to call up their reservations team to book. Their online system is restricted. Fares are about CAD $3-400 one way, can get cheaper and can be more expensive.

Welcome

Welcome to my travel cost blog.

I tend to travel a lot and am always searching for the cheapest deals; which I think others can benefit from the searching/information I have gathered. This is my way of sharing the information I have from travelling to places.

I hope to update it regularly so it will be an up to date source of information for people travelling to places I have just been to, as recent information is usually scarce or scattered over the internet.

My most recent trips were to Norway and Spain, stay tuned for information on travelling in both countries.
